Construction on the Brooklyn Bridge Begins
On this day in 1870, construction began on the Brooklyn Bridge. It was originally called the New York and
Brooklyn Bridge but became known as the Brooklyn Bridge in 1867.
The bridge connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn and when opened on May 24, 1883 was the
longest suspension bridge in the world. In 1964 it was designated a National Historic Landmark
