ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
August 4, 1790
The United States Revenue Cutter Service is
Established by Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton
On this day in 1790, after the Revolutionary War, The United States Revenue Cutter Service was formed to enforce
tariff laws.
With the United States struggling with debt from the war, the income from tariffs was vitally important. The
purpose of this new service was to enforce those laws. It would eventually become known as the U.S. Coast
Guard.
