ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
July 4, 1776
The Declaration of Independence is Adopted
by the Continental Congress
On this day in 1776, the Continental Congress of the United States agreed to the final wording on the
Declaration of Independence. Although this has become known as the birthday of the United States, they had actually
approved the Resoution of Independence on July 2 and the war for independence had already been raging for over a
year. As for the actual date of signing, some of the delagates claimed that they had signed the document on July 4,
but many histories believe it did not occur until August 2.
