December 5, 1839

General George Armstrong Custer is Born

On this day in 1839 General George Armstrong Custer was born in New Rumley, Ohio. Serving as an officer in the Army and a cavalry brigade commander during the American Civil War and the Indiana Wars he established a reputation as being aggressive and willing to take risks.

Although Custer enjoyed a distinguished career during the Civil War, he is most remembered for his defeat at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 against a group Native American tribes which resulted in the death of himself and his troops.
