Union Achieves its First Major Victory
in the American Civil War
On this day in 1862, U.S. forces led by Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant handed the Union its first major victory in
the American Civil War when his troups captured Fort Henry in Western Tennessee.
The surrender of Fort Henry allowed the Union to travel the Tennessee River destroying Confederate shipping and
railroad bridges.
