On this day in 1788, American pioneers arrived at what would become Marietta, Ohio, the first permanent American
settlement of the Northwest Territory in the United States. This settlement opened the westward expansion of the
new country.
These early pioneers, sometimes referred to as "the forty-eight" or the "first forty-eight" were considered early
American heroes.
