The U.S. Congress Passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
On this day in 1964, the United States Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in response to an alleged
attack on U.S. destroyers by Vietnamese torpedo ships. This has come to be known as the Gulf of Tonkin
Incident.
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave President Lyndon Johnson broad powers to use military force in Southeast Asia
without a declaration of war which lead to the U.S. increased involvement in the Vietnam Conflict.
