November 7, 1874
The Republican Party is First Symbolized by an Elephant
On this day in 1874, Harper's Weekly published a magazine containing a cartoon drawn by Thomas Nast. The cartoon
featured a donkey (representing the Democratic party) clothed in lion's skin scaring away animals at the zoo. One
of the animals running was an elephant labeled "The Republican Vote". From that point on, the elephant has been
associated with the Republican party.
