at the Urging of New York Times owner
On this day in 1904, Longacre Square was renamed Times Square by George B. McClellan, Jr., mayor of New York
City.
Longacre Square was originally named Long Acre by the British Colonists due to its similarity to an area of stables
and carriage shops in London by the same name.
