ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
April 9, 1865
Robert E. Lee Surrenders his army
to Ulysses S. Grant
at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia
On this day in 1865, Confederate general Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S.
Grant.
Although this did not officially end the war, it did spell the beginning of the end for the Confederate States of
America.
President Andrew Johnson declared the "insurrection" over in most of the Confederate states on April 2, 1866 but
left out Texas because it had not yet formed a new state government so was still not officially part of the United
States of America. It wasn't until August 20, 1866, that Johnson declared the "insurrection" at an end "throughout
the whole of the United States of America.".
