Elvis Presley Appears on the Ed Sullivan Show
For the First Time
On this day in 1956, Elvis Presley appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. Sullivan was not present
that day due to a near fatal automobile accident.
Presley's appearance on the show was controversial at the time due to what some considered his vulgar movements.
During the singing of Little Richard's "Ready Teddy", as he began to dance, the camera pulled in so the television
audience could only see him from the waist up.
