On this day in 1962, American spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers was exchanged for Soviet spy Rudolph Abel as a
result of an agreement between the two countries. Powers had been imprisoned by the Soviet Union after being shot
down on May 1, 1960 while flying over the Soviet Union during a mission.
