The Confederate Congress Endorses a Bill
to Enlist Black Soldiers in the Confederate Army
On this day in 1865, the Congress of the Confederate States of America endorsed a bill to enlist black soldiers
in the Confederate army. This had been discussed since the early days of the American Civil War but many southern
leaders had opposed the idea.
As the shortage of manpower grew during the later stages of the Civil War, support for the idea of black soldiers
became more popular.
