The First Commercial FM Radio Station is Launched

On this day in 1939, the first commercial FM radio station was launched. Its call sign was originally W1XPW but was changed over time to WDRC FM.

Although that was the first commercial FM radio station, the first audio transmission that could be termed a broadcast was claimed to have occured on Christmas Eve in 1906. The first Licensed "commercial" radio station began broadcasting on November 2, 1920.
