The Emma Abbott Makes its Maiden Voyage
On this day in 1875, the Emma Abbott, a floating hospital for kids, made its maiden voyage. The hospital was
named after the famous opera singer Emma Abbott who wanted to help poor children and their mothers get the medical
treatment that they couldn't afford. The Emma Abbott steamed around Manhattan for 14 years carring for over 900,000
patients.
