ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
September 20, 1848
The American Association for the
Advancement of Science is Created
On this day in 1848, the American Association for the Advancement of Science was created in Pennsylvania with
Williamn Charles Redfield as its first president.
The goal of the AAAS was to promote scientific dialogue in order to allow for greater scientific collaboration and
while it does have the word "American" in its name, it was not intended to be for the exclusive benefit of any one
nation.
By 1860, membership had increased to 2,000 but the American Civil War prevented further growth of the organization
until 1866 when the growth continued.
