January 22, 1973

The United States Supreme Court Delivers its
Decision in Roe v. Wade Making Abortion Legal

On this day in 1973, the United States Supreme Court delivered one of its most controversial decisions in history overturning all state and federal laws restricting abortion.

Roe v. Wade holds that a mother may abort her pregnancy for any reason, up until the "point at which the fetus becomes viable". National debate on this decision still continues.
