ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY

June 24, 1813

The Americans Lose the Battle of Beaver Dams
in The War of 1812

On this day in 1813, Americans attempted to take a British outpost at Beaver Dams but failed. They were then ambushed by Native warriors and were forced to surrender to the British.

The main reason the American attack failed was because of Laura Secord, who had overheard the American officers discussing the plans at her home where they were quartered. She was able to sneak away and warn the British of the pending attack.
