George III Becomes King of Great Britain
and King of Ireland

On this day in 1760, George III became King of Great Britain and King of Ireland when his grandfather, George II suddenly died. This is significant in American history because it was George III that occupied the throne during both the American Revolution and the beginning of the War of 1812.
