ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY

October 26, 1813

The Canadian Militia and Mohawk Warriors Defeat the
Americans in the Battle of the Chateauguay

On this day in 1813, an American force of about 2,600 was defeated by about 1,650 French Canadian militia and Mohawk warriors in the Battle of the Chateauguay during the War of 1812.

The battle began when the Americans tried to invade Canada as part of an ill-conceived plan to capture Montreal and hopefully take control of Upper Canada.
