The American Statistical Association is Founded in Boston
On this day in 1839, the Amererican Statistical Association was founded to promote the excellence in the
application of statistical science. The ASA's 18,000 members in the U.S., Canada, and overseas apply their
knowledge to medical research, exploration of space, quality assurance in industry, and many other issues. Notable
members of the ASA include Florence Nightingale, Alexander Graham Bell, Andrew Carnegie, and Martin Van Buren.
The ASA publishes several scientific journals including the Journal of the American Statistical Association, The
American Statistician, and Technometrics among others. The ASA has 78 chapters ranging in size from 50 to
1,000.
