May 28, 1863

The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment
Leaves Boston to Fight For the Union

On this day in 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment left Boston to fight for the Union in the American Civil War.

This was one of the first official black units on the Union side and saw extensive action during the war.
