Shays' Rebellion Begins
On this day in 1786, Shays' Rebellion Began. The Shays' Rebellion is named after Daniel Shays, a Massachusettes
farmer and Revolutionary War veteran. Shays and his followers were upset with the way they were treated when they
returned from fighting in the war. Many of the farmers came home heavily in debt after months or years of fighting
with little or no pay. To make matters worse, the high taxes inflicted upon them to help pay the debts from the war
effort was more than they could endure as they watched their friends and family hauled away to debtors' prison or
watched their land be confiscated and sold off to cover their debts.
