On this day in 1862, the Second Battle of Bull Run (called The Battle of Second Manassas by the Confederates),
ends in a Union defeat after three days of fighting.
It was the end of an offensive campaign waged by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Virginia against Union
forces lead by Maj. General John Pope. Pope was forced to beat a hasty retreat to Centreville, Virginia.
