The House of Burgesses Meets for the First Time
in Jamestown, Virginia
On this day in July, 1619, the first representative assembly in the new world, the House of Burgesses, meets for
the first time.
The assembly had 22 members which included the governor who was appointed by the company officials in London, the
governor's council, six citizens selected by the governor, and the representatives from various locales.
