Ray Harroun Becomes the Winner of the First Indianapolis 500
On this day in 1911, the first Indianapolis 500 took place. Aproximately 80,000 spectators attended the race
with 40 cars participating. Ray Harroun won the race in his Marmon Wasp with an average speed of 74.60 miles per
hour. The race took nearly 7 hours and only 12 cars finished.
