On this day in 1803, the Lewis and Clark expedition began when they left Pittsburgh, PA, heading West to the
Pacific and Lewis made his first diary entry.
The purpose of the expedition was to determine what was obtained in the Louisiana Purchase and study the Indian
tribes, geology, terrain, and wildlife.
