June 4, 1876

The Transcontinental Express Arrives in San Francisco
Via the First Transcontinental Railroad

On this day in 1876, an express train by the name of Transcontinental Express arrived in San Francisco from New York City in less than 84 hours completing the first trip on the Transcontinental Railroad.

Just ten years earlier, before the advent of trains, the same trip would have taken months via land or weeks via ship.
