Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only United States President to serve more than two terms. He was actually elected to office four times but died less than three months into his fourth.

Six years after the death of F.D.R., the Twenty-second Amendment to the Constitution was passed limiting the president to two terms. Before the Twenty-second Amendment, presidents limited themselves to two terms because of the example set by our first president, George Washington.
