African American Inventor Lewis Latimer Receives
Patent for First Light Bulb Using a Carbon Filament

On this day in 1881, Lewis Howard Latimer and felow inventor Joseph V. Nichols recieved a patent for the first electric light bulb using a carbon filament. Previous inventors had tried thousands of different materials including carbonized cotton thread which Thomas Edison discovered and used in his patent in January of the previous year.
