ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
March 20, 1922
The United States First Aircraft Carrier,
the USS Langley, is Commissioned
On this day in 1922, the USS Langley was commissioned as the United States Navy's first aircraft carrier.
Converted from a coal carrying cargo ship in 1920, it served as an aircraft carrier in World War II and was finally
sunk by its own escorts in 1942 after being badly damaged by Japanese bombing attacks.
