ON THIS DAY IN UNITED STATES HISTORY
April 29, 1945
The Dachau Concentration Camp is
Liberated by United States Troops
On this day in 1945, United States troops liberated the Dachau Nazi German concentration camp. The Dachau camp
was established on March 22, 1933. It was the first concentration camp opened and was a model for
those created later. During its operation, 200,000 persons where imprisoned here and 41,500 were
murdered.
When the American troops entered the camp, they were so horrified by it that some of the camp guards were killed
after surrendering. This came to be known as the Dachau massacre but no one was ever charged.
